Spathiphyllum: Plant Guide

Difficulty level: with the right conditions, the spathiphyllum is easy to maintain and will thrive and bloom in your space.

Light: the peace lily is known to tolerate low light, while it is generally considered a shade-loving plant, however, it does need plenty of filtered light. If in doubt whether the location you have selected to place it is appropriate, check whether the leaves are curled, pale or scorched, as these issues are all an indication that the plant is getting too much light or direct sunlight.

Air purifier: an excellent plant for improving the air quality of your home or office, according to the NASA Clean Air Study the plant can remove certain environmental toxins and contaminants such as benzene and formaldehyde amongst others.

Pet and child-friendly: the spathiphyllum contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals which can cause skin irritation and a burning sensation in the mouth amongst other issues, so it is best to keep your kids and pets away from the plant. In addition, it would be wise to wash your hands after handling your lily.

Ideal for: funerals, housewarming.

Spathiphyllum: Plant Background

Origin: a flowering tropical plant found predominantly in Columbia and the rainforests of Central and South America, the spathiphyllum is a genus of about 40 species in the family Araceae and is often confused for the flamingo flower due to their similarities in appearance. The plant has been hybridised to produce an assortment of varieties that range from small plants like the spathiphyllum power petite – the smallest type that only grows up to 38cm – to large varieties such as the spathiphyllum sensation which can reach up to 6 feet in height.

Also known as: peace lily and spath lily.

Symbolism: from symbolising hope and peace to having a close association with purity and innocence and connoting prosperity, the peace lily and its blooms, in particular, carry many meanings. For instance, it is often used in funerals since it symbolises rebirth, while in Christianity it is closely linked to the Virgin Mary. What’s more, in Feng Shui, the plant is known to calm and harmonise the home’s energy, while it is known to have protective and cleansing properties.

Fun fact: despite being often referred to as a lily, in essence, the plant does not form part of the lily family, but is a member of the aroids, closely related to other popular houseplants such as the philodendron, the anthurium and the alocasia. In addition, what we typically believe is a white flower is in actual fact a modified white leaf surrounding a cluster of tiny yellow flowers on a stalk.

Spathiphyllum: Plant Care

Watering: make sure you water your lily approximately once a week and keep the soil evenly moist but never too wet. In fact, leaves that turn yellow is an indication of soggy soil. Similarly, during the winter months, you may reduce the watering frequency, yet never let the soil to dry completely out. You may also mist the leaves to wipe off any accumulated dust.

Food: during the summer months you may feed the plant on a weekly basis, but do not fertilise in the winter. Alternatively, you can also use slow-release pellets at the beginning of the summer season.

Pruning: a good way of keeping your plant looking healthy and happy is to prune any dead flower stalks and leaves. All you need to do is simply cut the dead leaves and stalks at their base. Ideally, always disinfect your shears between each cut to eliminate the spread of any disease that could be present.

Ideal temperature: a range of between 18 and 27 degrees Celsius is perfect since the spathiphyllum likes a warm and moist temperature.

Avoid: any temperature that is lower than 5 degrees Celsius. Also, avoid any cold or hot draughts.

Pests: aphids, scale insects, mealybugs and spider mites are all common pests that can occasionally infect your plant. Cleaning the leaves with a damp cloth will help eliminate these parasites while maintaining a moist surrounding air will prevent these bugs from attacking your lily.
