Ficus Benjamina Twilight: Plant Guide

Difficulty level: thrives well with a little extra care.

Light: medium to bright indirect sunlight should do, though the more variegated the leaves, the more light it needs.

Air purifier: an excellent air purifier, the ficus is known to eliminate common household toxins like formaldehyde and xylene.

Pet and child-friendly: touching the ficus will cause no harm, however, contact with its sap may irritate the skin, while it may cause inflammation in the mouth and digestive issues if the leaves are swallowed.

Ideal for: housewarming, promotions and any other occasion.

Ficus Benjamina Twilight: Plant Background

Origin: a species of flowering plant that forms part of the Moraceae (Mulberry) family, the ficus twilight is native to Asia and Australia, although it is known to grow well in Europe, Africa, South America and the south of the USA. In the wild, the plant can reach a height of 30m. Also known as: weeping fig, benjamin tree or ficus tree.

Symbolism: from unity and knowledge to abundance and peace, the ficus has an abundance of symbolism linked to it. In the Middle East, the figs that grow on it in the wild represent unity and universal understanding and knowledge, while the tree itself is seen as a symbol of peace and abundance. On the other hand, large wild ficus trees are regarded as holy in East Asia and a link between the human and spirit worlds.

Fun facts: the ficus is known to have been growing and prospering for centuries, with fossil remains of the plant discovered dating back to 30 million years ago. It is also the official tree symbol of Bangkok.

Ficus Benjamina Twilight: Plant Care

Watering: moderate watering when the soil has begun to slightly dry is all the ficus needs, yet if the plant is placed in a bright spot, it may need watering more often. Ideally, you should test the soil’s surface by inserting your finger 1 to 2 inches below the surface. If the soil feels dry to the touch, then this indicates that the plant needs water. Add enough liquid until it runs out of the bottom of the pot, though avoid overly wet roots as this will rot them.

Food: you should fertilise your plant during its active growth period during the summer, around once a month. A multi-purpose fertiliser diluted to half its strength should do the trick. On the other hand, there is no need to fertilise when the days get short and cooler during autumn and winter.

Pruning: regular trimming will help maintain a full bushy shaped tree. Pruning can take place at any time, though ideally it should be done during spring and summer when the plant can recover faster. Use pruning shears if available or sharp scissors to cut just above a leaf.

Ideal temperature: maintain a minimum of 15 degrees and a maximum of 24 degrees Celsius.

Avoid: cold draughts which may cause the plant to drop its leaves suddenly. The same applies when changing its position frequently. Place your plant in a bright location with indirect light such as a west-facing window, while keep it away from apertures you tend to open frequently.

Pests: prone to pests such as mealybugs, scale and spider mites, healthy ficus trees shouldn’t experience any of these problems, however, if your plant is already stressed and is losing its leaves, it may be attacked by these pests. Regular spraying will help prevent issues such as spider mites, alternatively, you may want to treat your houseplant with some neem oil.
